Group Manager, Construction Services - Kitchener

Our client, currently has an opening for a Construction Services Group Manager in their Kitchener office. The successful candidate will manage the Construction Group within the wider Kitchener Transportation and Infrastructure Division within the Ontario Operation. This position is important to our clients strategic and business goals, and as such are looking for someone to make a valuable contribution to their operation. In this role, you will lead, inspire, and collaborate with talented people.

The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience, is an excellent communicator, and dynamic leader. You will work on a variety of tasks and develop your skills in many areas providing you with the opportunities for advancement and career growth. This individual will seek to improve our clients Ontario’s position as a growing service provider, in the Civil and Municipal Infrastructure market in Ontario, by working with the other groups, divisions, and offices across the operation and beyond. You will have the proven ability to build and manage a competent team; mentor Project Managers and Employees; achieve project and organizational targets; respond to the challenges and risks of the market; optimize financial, commercial and project delivery performance; develop the group’s business plan, programs and organization objectives to enhance margins, resource coordination and utilization. The successful candidate will promote our clients vision and culture, meeting the strategic goals and objectives established in collaboration with the Division Manager and other members of the Operations Senior Management Team.

Key Qualifications:

  •  Undergraduate degree in Engineering (Civil preferred) from an accredited university or equivalent.

  • P.Eng with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or equivalent.

  • 10+ years of construction administration, planning, and design experience in Ontario.

  • 5+ years management, construction project management, group management, coaching and mentoring experience in the infrastructure sector.

  • Demonstrated motivating leadership, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills, including strong negotiation, mediation, and persuasion skills.

  • Proven experience in business development and growth.

  • Proven ability to successfully deliver complex multi-discipline infrastructure assignments using recognized project management and quality management systems.

  • Proven integrity to deal with sensitive, privileged and confidential employee or client matters.

  • Proven ability to liaise and manage clients, contractors, and other consultants’ relationships.

  • Demonstrated ability to be creative, adaptable, results oriented, and ability to work under pressure.

  • Excellent prioritization, problem-solving, analytical, decision-making, and organizational skills.

  • Proficient in use of MS Office Suite of products including collaborative software such as OneNote and SharePoint.

  • Demonstrated membership and involvement in industry technical and/or professional organizations (i.e. director, board member, volunteer etc.).

  • ability to travel within Ontario and Canada.

 Responsibilities include the following:

  •  Ensuring financial success of the Construction Group within the Ontario operation through proactive construction project management, pre-positioning efforts, quality management, strategic partnering, hands-on delivery, and coaching of Project Managers and team.

  • Managing, guiding, mentoring, and coordinating field staff on all active construction assignments, and other group staff.

  • Leading the delivery of construction services for civil and municipal infrastructure projects.

  • Managing Construction Administration of the Group’s Construction projects, project delivery, business development, marketing initiatives, and strategic planning duties for the Construction Group within the Division and wider Ontario operation.

  • Ensuring construction project needs are met in an effective and timely matter.

  • Participating as a member of the Division leadership team and support the Ontario operation in contributing to discussions to the construction services and infrastructure market across the Company.

  • Participating as a technical and group leader in the field of civil and municipal infrastructure in the Division and across the operation.

  • Monitoring and identifying emerging trends and technologies.

  • Responsible for day-to-day management of resources and construction projects within the Construction Group and supporting other Project Managers as needed.

  • Liaising with other Construction Group Managers and Project Managers in our other offices and Operations across the Company.

  • Attending and contributing to construction-focused technical symposia, conferences, and seminars.

  • Assigning resources to construction projects and tasks to Engineers and Technologists, and supervising delegated tasks for content, quality and completion in assigned hours.

  • Managing the team in the planning, analysis, project engineering and design activities of the group’s infrastructure assignments as needs and opportunities arise, in collaboration with other Groups.

  • Leading the Construction Group and supporting the Company pursuit process including proposal delivery, review evaluation, proposal preparation efforts, technical content and fee development, as well as obtaining pursuit approvals.

  • Ensuring that all technical, project management, safety and administrative aspects of our construction services are being performed in a manner consistent with the Company’s goals, standards, and performance objectives.

  • Ensuring quality and accuracy of designs, reports, and studies, and performing site inspections as required.

  • Developing staffing requirements for construction projects along with Project Managers, the Division Manager, the VP and General Manager, and the Human Resources Generalist.

  • Assisting with recruitment, career planning, and salary reviews for staff within the Construction Group, and mentoring and coaching staff.

  • Managing Client, Contractor, and other consultant/partner relationships for construction projects.

  • Assisting in the development of engineering concepts, concept reports, and construction budgets.

  • Preparing technical reports, proposals, design briefs, and outline design drawings and specifications for construction projects.

  • Attending client meetings and coordinating meetings with design teams for construction projects.

  • Complying and working within a COR certified environment and performing all duties in accordance with those specified under the Occupational Health & Safety Act and applicable legislation.

  • Leading the Construction Group in coordinating the completion of constructability reviews and delivery of tender ready construction contracts and providing necessary project and technical support during construction phases.
